Fantastic Langkawi Island
Monday 3rd August 2009

Another successful Family Holiday.....
I have recently returned from a fantastic 2 weeks in Malaysia with Mum and the kids! Flying with Malaysia Airlines thru Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi Island. The overnight flight was a bonus for the extra time but early check in at the hotel is a must!!!
We stayed the Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort on Cenang Beach which offered the best facilities to suit all of our needs. The Pool View rooms were fantastic and only a short walk back from the beach, set amongst beautiful tropical gardens. The rooms were a great size, especially for a long stay and very well maintained. Even though it was a large resort, we took advantage of the chauffeured driven golf buggies to get around.
The resort kept us busy, with the kids meeting “friends” from different parts of the world and participating in different activities, with Mum and I keeping a close eye on the pool over the tops of our books.
Due to the fantastic exchange rate with the Malaysian Ringgit, it was very reasonable to eat at the hotel, which for lunch was convenient. Evenings had 3 varieties of dining to choose from at the resort although it was a leisurely walk (or a quick cab ride) in Cenang Beach for a larger choice of dining options. This is where we discovered an amazing restaurant called Putumayo, offering a fabulous dining experience for all of us. Highly recommend the seafood there!!
Not one to sit still for too long, Langkawi Island offered plenty to do for all of us. 30 minutes away by taxi saw us doing a bit of shopping in Kuah on a rainy day but the Cable Car Experience was amazing (not to mention a bit scary). The kids & I took on the local horses, walked to the waterfalls, did the Island hopping trip to the Lake of the Pregnant Maiden, had an encounter with the local monkeys and even went out fishing for a few hours where I am certain we could have filled an aquarium with the brightly colored catches. If that wasn’t enough, there were plenty of beachfront activities such as paragliding, jet ski’s and the ever popular banana boat rides!! There is plenty left to do for our next visit.
We then headed to Kuala Lumpur for a few days for a bit of retail therapy (for some) which was perfect as the “sales” were on, making our purchases a total bargain. We even made an appearance at the night market for our best buys. The indoor Cosmo’s World Theme Park, including a roller coaster, was a big hit with the kids as was Sunway Lagoon Water Theme Park.
The spectacular city lights at night, especially the Petronas Towers and the KL Tower, made our visit to Kuala Lumpur a memorable one.
We arrived at the start of the Monsoon season which was very hot and humid but not an issue with the beautiful pool areas and great air conditioning/fans in the rooms. It did result in the cancellation of some of the water activities and boat trips for a few days. Ideal time (dry season) to visit Langkawi Island is November thru to March.
