Cairns at Christmas

Cairns in summer is the least likely place for Australians to go for a holiday. We took the challenge to spend Christmas with family and to take on the so called ‘wet season’ of the north. The direct services are the only way to go, with flights from Melbourne taking around 3.5 hours.

When we first arrived the humidity was a bit of a shock, but we soon settled into our social routine. The wet season was thankfully delayed, as it seems to be getting later each year. So we enjoyed near perfect conditions, without too many other tourists.

Cairns is the gateway to Far North Queensland with a destination to suit most travellers. One of my favourites (on which everyone agrees) is the picturesque beach setting of Palm Cove. This small seaside village boasts some great little eateries and a variety of accommodation.

A spectacular one hour drive north of Cairns is another favorite spot, Port Douglas. This is a great place to browse in the boutiques, or to enjoy lunch with the locals in the pub!

Also of interest is Trinity Beach, which has an appeal for a quiet getaway with a stunning beach to enjoy.

All areas have a range of accommodation from self contained apartments through to 5 star luxury; therefore everyone’s travel needs are catered for!

As we have previously visited this area we chose not to take a trip out to the Great Barrier Reef or Kuranda, but to “chill out” with a swim at the new lagoon on the shore front or by sipping cocktails overlooking the bay! The added bonus (for some) was that last minute shopping with the great pre-Christmas sales.

A "must do" is to visit the local Rustys Food Market and sample some of the home cooked Asian delights from the vendors, or to buy some of the freshest fruit and vegetables ever!

So if you are thinking of spending your Christmas or Summer Holidays somewhere different, why not think of taking the chance of enjoying the tropics in all its glory, as we hope to do again in a year or two!

All airlines fly direct daily to and from Cairns and by booking early you can take advantage of the cheaper airfares.
