Family holiday in Vibrant Vanuatu!

Discovering the exotic destination of Vanuatu was such an exciting experience for both me and my family. I’m originally from the UK and have visited many beautiful Mediterranean European destinations. Vanuatu, however, was a revelation, an experience for the sight and soul! From the moment we arrived at the airport, despite the time being almost midnight, we were greeted by the smiling faces of a local group of singers, what a beautiful welcome!

We knew we had arrived in a true tropical paradise. An idyllic archipelago of 83 islands, Vanuatu boasts endless white sandy beaches, abundant coral reefs, lush rainforests and impressive culture. We had decided to stay on the main island of Efate, close to the main city of Port Vila at Le Lagon resort, approximately half an hours drive from the airport, which with children then aged 1 and 3, was an ideal location.

We had chosen Vanuatu and Le Lagon resort due to the high recommendations we’d received about the kids club and child friendly features. We were not disappointed. Not only this, there were many activities available in the resort, boat trips, kayaking across to Erakor Island, a golf course and entertainment each evening at dinner, including an amazing display by local warrior dancers, followed by free tasting of the local kava! We saw two couples get married at Le Lagon, proving that it is a romantic retreat for adults as well as a great place for families to enjoy a relaxing break.

There are many other great hotels and resorts to choose from to suit different requirements, such as the stunning adults only resort of Irriki island-very popular with honeymooners and Le Meridian Resort & Casino, an established favourite for all ages. Just a small taste of the great selection of accommodation to suit all visitors to Vanuatu!
We escaped for a day, leaving our children in the care of the kids club and visited Hideaway Island. Not one for being overly adventurous in the water I was nonetheless encouraged to go snorkelling by our guide, who went to great lengths to ensure everyone had a fantastic time. I have never seen water like it, the fish and coral reefs were amazing. It was a relaxing day and we enjoyed a beautiful BBQ lunch on the beach and enjoyed the serenity of our surroundings.

We had great fun visiting Port Vila for duty free shopping, apparently the cheapest in the south pacific. There were many bargains to be found, local wood carvings, clothes, leather and designer goods. The streets are full of hustle and bustle and the local’s love children, my boys received much attention when we were out and about! For the more adventurous there are many opportunities to venture further. Tanna Island is home to the Yasur Volcano –reputably the most accessible active volcano in the world. You can take a 4wd tour and get within 150 metres of the crater rim, or take a more relaxed approach and take a flight across the crater, either during the day or night.

There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy boat trips around various parts of Efate, where you can sit back and just watch the spectacular scenery drift past at your leisure while you soak up the sun.

Vanuatu is a destination that compels me to return one day and experience more of its magic. It offers so much to any visitor of any age. Be prepared for sensational beaches, a vibrant and colourful culture, fascinating places to visit, great restaurants and a slower pace of life. Relax, enjoy and soak up all Vanuatu has to offer! I look forward to planning your dream holiday to this fascinating destination soon!
