Delightful Devonport and the NorthWest Coast

Every year my family travels to Devonport to visit relatives. This is the major port for the Spirit of Tasmania, or ‘the boat’ as we mainlanders call it. The beauty of travelling over on the Spirit of Tasmania is that you can take your car with you. Tassie is such a great self-drive destination and we like to take full advantage of the short distances between attractions, of which there are many. Apart from being a great base to see Cradle Mountain and Launceston, the area has a lot to offer.

Devonport and the whole North West coast is such a relaxing destination, delightful country towns such as Ulverstone and Penguin are linked together by the major highway that hugs the coast. It is a beautiful drive for sightseeing. The pristine water spills up over the rocks and there is no shortage of lovely flora and fauna, just mind the penguins between October and March!!

In Devonport you will find the Don River Railway which has vintage trains and also complete with Thomas The Tank Engine Display, kids will love the Imaginarium Science Centre, and the Bluff is a popular area for swimming and sightseeing, complete with lighthouse and aboriginal cultural centre. Mersey River Cruises also operate through the LaTrobe river and offer great views of Mt Roland and many bird species.
In neighbouring area of Ulverstone and Gunns Plains there also plenty of attractions. Wings Wildlife Park has a great variety of animals, including the infamous Tasmanian Devil. There is also the Berry and Cherry Farms and Café, Motton Terraces Cellar Door Vineyard, Gunns Plains Caves and Alleena Bears, which is a private bears collection.

Moving further east towards Burnie is my favourite stop of all, the National Foods Cheese Tasting Centre! Many many different varieties and tastings are available here. From your traditional cheddars, to your Wasabi or pickled flavoured Mersey cheeses. There is also the Creative Paper factory here, Natone Hills Fly Fishery and the Hillyers Whisky Distillery. The Guide Falls Alpaca Farm and tearoom is a hit with the kids.
Access to the area isn’t restricted to the Spirit of Tasmania, there are plenty of options for those land lovers too as there is an airport located in Devonport, and also Launceston which is only 1 ½ hours drive away! Car hire or coach transfers are readily available at either destination.

As the new year progresses I am reminded that it is time indeed for me to book my next trip to Devonport and visit the family as well as give in to my cravings to visit that cheese factory again.
