Thailand - a country of amazing diversity

5 Stars

I went to Thailand for a 2 week break and ended up staying for 5 months. It was part of a year long trip through India and South East Asia.

There is so much to see and do in Thailand. I went up to Chiang Mai and spent a few days exploring the temples and decided to visit some of the hill tribes in the North. Many of the hill tribe villagers are refugees from surrounding countries and still try to live their lives as they have always done. Many of them still wear their traditional clothes...the Paduang Hill tribe commonly known as the 'Long Neck Women' still wear the brass rings around their necks. These people are very hospitable and are happy for you to visit to learn about their culture.

There are the beautiful waterfalls out near Kanchanaburi and the war museums to learn about the brave soldiers who worked on the Burma Railway. For those of you who feel quite outgoing, you can visit the Tiger temple and walk with and even stroke a tiger who lives in the Buddhist monastery....just don't wear red clothing!!!

Bangkok is either a city you LOVE or HATE...it is a big, bustling, noisy, dirty city but it is so full of life. There is always something going on. I loved cruising along the river and seeing all the people haggle their trade at the river markets.

There are also the many beautiful beaches which Thailand has to offer....the crystal clear water, the crunchy white sand and the amazing sealife and limestone cliff structures rising from the water. Whether you like to relax in a beautiful resort or sleep in a thatched roof beach hut, Thailand has so much to offer. I found a beautiful little beach and rolled out my straw mat and mosquito net and stayed there for a couple of months...how many places in the world can you do this and be accepted and feel quite safe?

And the food.......expect to gain about 1kg/week in Thailand......from sticky rice to pad thai noodles and the many curries and mangosteens. My favourite was the fresh pineapples on a stick which they bring to you on the beach which is so sweet, tasty and refreshing after a lovely swim.

Thailand is an absolute gem!
I look forward to giving you some good ideas for your next trip to Thailand.
