Given the size of Canada, the limited holiday time you have and the amount of things you’d like to see like snow-capped mountains, glassy lakes, wildlife, cities and the Northern Lights, how would you ever pack it all in on the one trip? Easy! With one or two hassle-free, all-inclusive rail journeys, of course!
Experiencing Canada by rail is not only convenient, it’s also luxurious and very social. Here, we have rounded up four of the many ways you can see this magnificent country VIA Rail. Take a look at these wonderful itineraries:
City Sights, Northern Lights & Winter Nights
Journeying from Vancouver to Winnipeg, this is a 13-night itinerary where the sights, lights and nights are guaranteed to create everlasting memories. After a tour of the vibrant harbour city of Vancouver, a visit to Granville Island, Whistler and Shannon Falls, you’ll head to the culturally rich capital of Manitoba, Winnipeg. Then a flight over to Churchill is where you’ll enjoy four nights of northern lights viewing, with other highlights like buggy rides, snowshoeing and dog-sledding all part of the experience. Note the March and April only departures for this program.
Nature, Culture & Wildlife Experience
Another 13-night itinerary travelling along the same route as the above from Vancouver to Winnipeg and the flight to Churchill, this program which is available from September to November is a lot richer with wildlife encounters. You will see polar bears, arctic foxes, ptarmigans and many other subarctic animals. While there will be no viewing of northern lights, you will enjoy dog-sledding and tundra buggy adventures across the rough and raw terrain of this region.
City Sights and Northern Lights
Should time be an issue, a 9-night itinerary that stays on the West Coast of Canada might be the best way to go. Available from August to April, and starting in Edmonton, you’d head to Vancouver to discover its city sights before flying up to Whitehorse for two nights of Aurora viewing and day tours to take in the highlights of Main Street, the Train Depot of the White Pass & the Yukon Route, the Log Skyscraper, the Log Church, the Sternwheeler SS Klondike, the Fish Ladder and Schwatka Lake.
Cross Canada by Rail
If crossing the length of the country is on the cards, then this year-round 14-night Vancouver to Toronto itinerary has all the excitement and beauty you are after! From the bright city lights of Vancouver to Whistler and Shannon Falls right across the country to the thundering Niagara Falls and Toronto, the journey ends in Halifax, but not before a visit to the oh-so charming French-speaking Montreal.
