Whichever of the 26 Atolls you choose to visit, you know you’re guaranteed a slice of paradise from the moment that you arrive. Listen to the waves gently stirring from the veranda of your over-water villa, discover a colourful underwater world on a snorkel safari or find zen in a tranquil retreat. Each island promises its own unique experience, so whether you’re looking for wellness, water sports or a romantic getaway just for two, here are some of the best hotels and resorts to choose from.
Best for couples
As one of the most romantic locations in the world, the Maldives is perfect for honeymooners and couples wanting to reconnect. There are countless resorts to give the relaxation and privacy you’re in search of, and we recommend Conrad Maldives on intimate Rangali island. The resort offers a romantic sunrise breakfast excursion on a luxury yacht, or if you’d prefer to stay in bed a little longer set sail on a sunset champagne cruise and raise a toast with a glass of bubbles and canapes. Back on land, there’s the Quiet Zone – an adults-only open-air bar with plush daybeds, a chill out soundtrack and mixologists on hand creating bespoke cocktails for you to sip on.
Alternatively, there’s Anantara Kihavah – a beachfront sanctuary with excursions and activities to create unforgettable moments. Here you can unwind with a couple’s massage in the overwater spa, which comes complete with viewing glass into the ocean below so you can watch the calming ebb of the waves underneath. For a truly unique experience, spend a day on a secluded sandbank just for the two of you. Lunch, drinks and delicious snacks will be served to you, and you can relax in blissful surroundings on beanbags under a shaded canopy.
Best for wellness
COMO Hotels and Resorts are the undisputed frontrunners when it comes to wellness resorts, and with two in the Maldives, you’re almost spoilt for choice. COMO Maalifushi is the only resort in the tiny Thaa Atoll, and this on the 6th September you’re invited to kickstart your healthier lifestyle on a week-long retreat dedicated to fitness and nutrition. An expert fitness coach and nutritionist will educate and support you throughout the programme and teach how to slip techniques from Pilates to cardio into your daily routine, taking full advantage of the natural gym of the ocean, beach and jogging trails.
Similarly, COMO Cocoa Island Resort will be offering a Shambala retreat in from the 6th-12th October this year, where guests will be able to learn the philosophy of healthy living and benefit from a collection of workshops that are easy to fit into everyday life. There’ll be fusion workouts, education on meal composition and eating approaches, plus breathing techniques and restorative body work.
Best for water sports
Choose the platinum plan at Lily Beach Resort and Spa, Huvahendhoo and you’ll enjoy use of complimentary snorkelling equipment and free unlimited non-motorised water sports throughout your stay. You’ll also be able to choose two excursions, from coral garden snorkelling to paddling across the lagoon in a glass-bottomed canoe – it’s entirely up to you how you discover the underwater world.
Atmosphere Kanifushi has its own PADI dive centre with courses for beginners through to advanced divers. There’s even the chance to head off on a night dive to discover nocturnal sea creatures and enjoy an experience like no other. If you don’t feel ready for the deeper ocean the resort takes guests on two snorkelling excursions per day to a choice of seven snorkelling sites. When it comes to water sports, try your hand at stand-up paddle boarding, parasailing and windsurfing to name a few.
Best for a desert island escape
Six Senses Laamu is hidden away on an exclusive Atoll giving a real desert island experience. Time seems to stand still, and you’ll find everything you need right in one place as you unwind in your sustainable overwater or on-land villa. In this resort, you’ll find an undisputed respect for the surroundings and wildlife and can even take part in the weekly reef clean, a grounding experience that gives a true sense of giving back to this island that defines natural beauty.
Another advocate of sustainable tourism is Constance Moofushi, a resort that champions digital detoxing during your stay. A holiday to this stripped-back resort will immerse you in the perfect combination of luxury and simplicity. Discover activities and entertainment that you won’t find anywhere else in the world apart from here, from watching a traditional Boduberu band play on drums crafted from coconut wood to breakfast on a traditional Dhoni boat and even wine tasting as you wade through the shallows with baby sharks swimming around your feet.
Best for families
Situated in the South Ari Atoll, Centara Grand Island Resort and Spa is a barefoot paradise with family-friendly overwater villas with a children’s sleeping area and steps down to the lagoon (but secured access to the terrace for safety). Other amenities for families include a children’s pool, a kids’ club, the teen E-Zone with chill-out spaces and water sports, plus free excursions including snorkelling tours, whale-shark boat-trips, local island discovery and sunset fishing.
Alternatively, just a 45-minute speedboat ride from Malé, OZEN by Atmosphere at Maadhoo Island offers all-inclusive contemporary accommodation, including beachfront Earth Family Suites with private pools and shared butler service. The OZEN Kids Club involves children and early teens in exploration, sports and other activities, while there are also complimentary non-motorised water sports, sunset fishing and one adventure excursion per day.
