Highlights of Missouri

22 February 2019

Missouri is a Midwestern state covered by grassy plains and the forested Ozark Mountains. Cruise down Route 66 for vintage Americana; put on your dancing shoes for nights of jazz, rock and more; visit one of more than 50 state parks for outdoor adventure; and tuck into a plate of slow-cooked barbecue – what more could you want?!

Here are our top five things you can’t miss during a visit to Missouri:

Go to the Gateway Arch

When you approach the city of St. Louis and spot the downtown skyline, you’ll see the spectacular Gateway Arch: 900,000 kilograms of stainless-steel sections assembled and completed in 1965 as a symbol to honour exploration. The Gateway Arch sits on the Gateway Arch National Park, a 100-acre national park with large fields, bikeways and pathways, pools and gardens. You’ll also find the Museum at the Gateway Arch and the Old Courthouse where the historical Dred Scott trials began.

Be Cultured at Forest Park

St. Louis’ urban park is packed with museums, art galleries, golf courses, tennis courts, playgrounds, dining and the Jewel Box: an Art Deco greenhouse featuring a glass roof that reaches 15 metres high.

BBQ in Kansas City

A trip to Missouri wouldn’t be complete without enjoying a Kansas City-style barbecue: a regional barbecue style of slowly smoked meat that originated from the pit of Henry Perry in the early 1900s in Kansas City. Missouri and Kansas City are known for serving up some of the best pulled pork, brisket and burnt ends, and there is no end to barbecue joints available for you to check out.

Soak up Lake of the Ozarks

With more shoreline than California – 1,850 kilometres – it’s guaranteed there’s something for everyone, whether you’re looking for a peaceful getaway or an adventure-packed weekend. Spend the day at a lakeside swimming pool, head indoors to Timber Falls Indoor Waterpark, enjoy waterside fine dining as the sun sets or stroll down the nostalgic Bagnell Dam Strip with its reminders of a simpler time.

Beat the Blues at National Blues Museum

The National Blues Museum explores and celebrates the genre as the foundation of all modern American music. Guests will be educated in an entertaining environment that includes high impact technology driven experiences, a state-of-the-art theatre, artefact exhibits and lectures.
